Bridal Makeup For Fair Skin:

Bridal Makeup Tips For Fair Skin 001 300x273 heath and beauty tips
  1. Firstly, make sure one thing that the foundation should always be matched well with the skin color. If you are making the use of the moisturizer then you must apply the use of the liquid foundation because it will allow the makeup to get stick with the skin until the end of the time.
  2. In the section of the lipsticks always make the choice of soft and lighter shades. The best lipstick shades for the fair skin have been pink, rosy pink and apricot color. Avoid using the brown color because it will make the whole image as dull and drab.
  3. In the eye shadows just make the use of all such colors that are suitable for the skin complexion. For the eye shadows the use of black and brown grey color would be the just perfect alternative for making the eyes much prominent for others.
  4. Additionally, in the face of the blush on colors just keep the cheeks as natural as possible. You can make the use of pink color and just stay away from the brown and dark colors because they are just not suitable for the fair skin.
On the whole these were some of the few main bridal makeup tips for fair skin that would make the bride feel contended enough on her wedding day.

Old Wedding Dresses

Old style wedding dressesOld style wedding dresses was the top-end most famous dressing style in Great Britain at the times. Every bridal couples were very excited in using this style. But, not all couples could wear this style in their wedding ceremony because these dresses were only worn by the kingdom. So, there are a lot of people who rarely know about this. By reading this article, hopefully can help people in this century in giving a reference to their wedding plan.

1922 Old style wedding dresses by Evelyn Griffith
This Old style wedding dresses by Evelyn Griffith is a long white crowned-gown with long ribbon hanging on the crown. The style of this dress is just like a kind of an evening gown but actually it isn’t. This dress has a flowery corsage circling in the waist of the bride; it’s meant that it is a wedding dress. A ball of flowers is also held by the bride. The typical characteristic of this wedding dress is in its cloak and its wonderful diadem. The crown style is adapted from American dressing style. This dress is really smooth and comfortable to wear.

1922 silhouetted Old style wedding dresses
The next Old style wedding dresses is kind of silhouetted slightly long dress with drop waist. It is simpler than Evelyn’s but has a cute color and figure. This dress has a wide neckline and shows the shoulder to make a sensual sense. This dress also makes a new way in how the shape of wedding dresses is; it breaks the ancient style of long sleeves wedding dress into short one. Not all parts of previous wedding dress style are changed; the famous fashion of hemline is still shown in this dress.

Those two types of dresses are the most popular dressing style in 1922. These dresses show up the glamorousness of wearing wedding dresses. The best thing of this is that there is no way to forget Old style wedding dresses.

How to Make a Wedding Dress

A wedding is surely a special day for every woman in her life, and she would like everything from the wedding cake to the wedding dress to be just perfect. Wedding gowns are usually very expensive and most times women save money to buy their dream wedding gown. But if you are short on budget, making your wedding dress on your own would be a great idea. If you are planning to make a wedding dress for yourself, it is necessary for you have stitching skills. If you do not, start making some dresses for yourself, so that you understand the basics about stitching. Here are some tips on making of a wedding dress.

Steps to Make a Wedding Dress

The first step towards making a wedding dress is the designing. You can look through different fashion and bridal magazines where you would find different wedding dress styles and designs. The Internet is also a good place to search for wedding gown designs. You can choose one from them or create your own design. But you need to look whether that pattern would look good on you, i.e whether it fits well with your body type. Ask for opinions from close friends and family, may be they can come up with ideas that would make the design of the wedding gown better.
Once you are done with this, the next step would be to choose the fabric to make the wedding dress. Normally, the wedding dress is made of satin, but you can also make it with silk, cotton, tulle, taffeta, linen, etc. Other than this, the color of the wedding dress need not be restricted to white only, rather you can choose colors like light blue, pink, beige, ivory, gray, etc. Choose a color that would go well with your skin tone. Find out how much cloth would be required to sew a wedding gown and buy a little more than you would actually require so that you can make changes if something goes wrong during the sewing process.
After this is done, you have to start with the measurements. As doing this on your own can be a little difficult and may lead to inaccurate measurements, it would be better to take the help of some other person like a friend or sibling to take your correct measurements. Once you are done with the measurements, you can start making your wedding dress. However, it is always recommended to try the pattern on a muslin (plain woven material) to understand how to go about making a wedding dress. It would also be a good idea, because if you make any mistake in this, you would surely avoid it while making the original bridal gown. You would even come to know whether the pattern really suits you.
Cut the muslin cloth according to the pattern you have decided and sew the gown. Once you have done this, try it on. Most of the time it would be loose fitting and here comes the main job. With the help of pins, pin all the places to make the dress into a perfect fit. As this job cannot be done on your own, ask for the help of a friend to pin up the dress according to your fit. Remove the dress without taking off the pins and sew them together (hand stitch would do), and again try it on to know whether further alterations are needed.
Now comes the most important and difficult step. You have to carefully draw the dress pattern with new measurement on to the paper for your actual gown. After this is done, transfer this design on the actual fabric. This requires lots of patience and should be done very carefully. Once you think that you have taken the measurement correctly, it is time to stitch it together. Try the gown once again and note down the final adjustments or alterations that you have to do.
The next step would be to decorate the wedding dress. You must plan this at the same time of designing the dress. You can use frills, beads, sequins, pearls, etc., to make your wedding gown look beautiful and elegant.

The biggest advantage of making a wedding dress on your own is that it is less expensive as compared to buying one. However, if you are thinking of making your wedding gown, it would be good to start your work on the wedding dress 3 - 4 months before the wedding day. This would give you ample time to work on the gown and make changes if some problem arises. Last minute preparations would leave you with very less time and the end result would not be what you expected.

A last word of advice is to keep in mind the bridal jewelry and the wedding shoes that you have chosen or have in mind, while making your dress. You would surely enjoy the whole process and would cherish your wedding gown that you made with so much efforts, for a lifetime.

Making Wedding Gown

Women making adjustment to wedding gown in professional fashion designer studio - stock photo Some people dread planning their vows, others can't commit to a music playlist for the wedding reception. The one thing that a bride can't put off shopping ahead for is the wedding gown, because most of them have to be ordered well in advance.

Wedding gown shopping isn't always fun for the bride, although it should be. If you don't enjoy clothing shopping as a general rule, you probably aren't looking forward to wedding gown shopping either. Even girls with perfect figures who are excited about visiting the bridal shop worry about how they will look in the mirror, draped in white satin. It's fairly safe to say that every bride is anxious when she first sets foot in the bridal salon, albeit for a variety of different reasons.

Face it, few women are confident about their physical stature, whether we dislike our weight, our height, our skin, or our coloring. Most of us can find numerous flaws that nobody else can see when we look into the mirror. So how can you make wedding gown shopping as painless as possible? Start by leaving the camera crew, the cheering section and the peanut gallery behind at home.

Since wedding gown shopping is an unavoidable part of the wedding planning process for every bride, I have 10 ten tips to help:

1) Don't bring anybody who is a Debbie Downer with you to the dress shop. Don't bring anybody who is competitive (excellent time for your unwed older sister to stay home).
2) Go buy proper undergarments before you start your shopping. There's a store called Sylene's in Chevy Chase, Maryland that has every foundation garment you could ever think of (my mother dragged me there before my first formal high school dance to purchase what would be the first of many iron maiden-like devices to give me shape during my lifetime). I'm sure there's a similar shop in your area too. The salesclerks are usually 80 years old and can tell you in one glance if you're wearing the correct cup size.
3) Bring shoes with you that are the approximate height you'd want to wear. It gives you a longer line and is more realistic.
4) Before you go shopping, do your hair nicely and put on some makeup. Not enough that you have to worry about pulling a dress over your head, but enough so that when you look in the mirror at your face above a mile-long expanse of white satin, you don't look dead. Nobody looks good in that much white under fluorescent lighting without makeup.
5) Be open-minded about the style of gowns you agree to try on. Just because you always wanted a lace-up bustier style doesn't mean that it's going to look good on you. Maybe the column dress you think you're too fat for is really the most fantastic look for you. How will you ever know if you don't put it on? You don't have to try on two mermaid gowns if the first one adds junk to your trunk.
6) Limit how many friends and family visit the dress shop with you. Have you seen the episodes of "Say Yes" when there are 15 people there and they each have an opinion? Basically the bride called everybody she's ever met and said, "Hey, they're going to film me," and everybody she's ever been friends with came with her. You really need only one or two people to help you make your selection.
7) If you have a tight budget, start shopping at David's Bridal and other budget-conscious outlets before you start going to boutiques. Once you try on the silk satin gown, there's no going back to polyester. Sorry.
8) Trying on a headpiece, veil, tiara or whatever can be just what you need to unleash your inner bride. Let them fancy you up when you're trying things on. Sure, they want to sell you a $1,000 veil you have no intention of wearing. But you're not married yet so there's no harm in looking. And you don't have to buy it.
9) Choose your gown before you even discuss bridesmaids' attire. Your gown will dictate what the rest of the girls wear, and you're the most important person on your wedding day. Don't let anybody push you into committing to something before you have time to think about what you want to do for yourself first.
10) Keep the gown a secret from your groom. Some time-honored traditions have merit, and I strongly believe in this one. Except in rare circumstances, I advocate keeping the fiancé totally out of the dress selection, transport and preparation process. It will be well worth the look on his face when he sees you making your way down the aisle.

How will you know when you have found just the right dress? For me, it was the one that came back into my head over and over again, no matter how many others I looked at. My girlfriend Laura always says you've found the right wedding gown when the sight of you makes a total stranger cry -- and that did happen to her in a bridal shop, although I'm not sure that all of us could evoke tears that easily. Only you will know the exact "aha!" moment when you realize that you are looking at yourself in your wedding gown. For me, it didn't happen until the day I got married, but I still love that dress more than anything. I fully intend to wear it again on my 10th wedding anniversary.

One last important tip for destination wedding brides: Lie to the dress shop about your wedding date. In busy wedding season, shops can get behind on alterations and with a destination wedding, you can't afford a delay. Lie to the bridal salon by at least a month about your wedding date to be sure that you have that dress finished, fitted and packed to travel in time to depart for your wedding weekend.

Until next time, happy wedding planning from Weddings in Vieques and Weddings in Culebra!

Wedding Dress Shopping

I’m thrilled to welcome a new addition to Bridal Musing’s team of contributors. Meet the lovely Sama, our resident wedding dress expert.
Sama is a bridal consultant at top London bridal boutique, Blackburn Bridal Couture, where she helps stylish brides, just like you, to choose their dream dress. She is also a bride to be herself and editor of The Utter Blog where she obsesses about all things weddings. (A girl after my own heart).
Lucky for us she will be stopping by regularly with her hints tips and advice on finding the perfect wedding dress – straight from the fitting room!
Blackburn Bridal Couture, LondonWell, hello there Bridal Muso’s, and thank you so much Elizabeth for inviting me on to your gorgeous blog! For those who don’t know me (erm… probably 99% of you), my name is Sama and I’m lucky enough to work at the utterly fabulous Blackburn Bridal Couture – one of London’s BEST bridal boutiques, if I say so myself.
I’ve been there a couple of years now, and it really is a wonderful job with a wonderful team, and despite my fears that it would put me off weddings for life, it absolutely hasn’t. I genuinely love helping brides find their wedding dress, and I’m pleased to say I’ve come a long way since my very first day when, channeling my inner professional woman, I turned up in a little black number and 4″ heels.
(Note to self: do not wear stilettos in a job where you barely sit down.)
The gorgeous Blackburn Bridal Couture, London
Not only do I now work in the industry, but I’m a bride-to-be myself (just over 4 months to go – yikes!) so have experienced the highs and lows of dress shopping from both sides of the fitting room curtain, so to speak.
For me, the essence of my job comes down to building a relationship with the person standing semi-naked in front of me and listening to what they have to say; to finding out all about their wedding plans and becoming their confidante when Mum is screaming ‘you’re too exposed!’ or friends are thinking more about what they’d wear rather than the person they’ve come to support.
Wedding dress shopping is an emotional minefield; at times enjoyable but more often than not stressful and bloody confusing! Every bridal shop works differently and your experiences will vary greatly. You have been warned.
So to kick off this series on Bridal Musings, I thought I’d condense everything I’ve learnt in the last couple of years in to one Top-Tip style post.
It may seem brutal at points but I consider it essential reading for all brides-to-be out there about to make the biggest purchase of their life. I hope you find it helpful…
*Disclaimer: These are my personal views, please take lightly*
1. Wedding dresses are expensive - do your research.
Scrap that – wedding dresses are bloody expensive. Before working in bridal I’d always imagined I’d spend around £1000 on a dress but in reality the choice at that price point is really very limited. We meet a lot of brides who have started dress shopping with a figure in their heads and have quickly upped it when they’ve realised what they get for their money. There’s a lot of fabric in a wedding dress, and good quality fabric comes at a cost. Do your research. When you see a wedding dress you like the look of in a blog or magazine, ring the shop and find out the price. Once you have an idea of how much you’re going to spend, call the shops you have your eye on and make sure your price range fits with theirs. There’s no point going to a shop that starts from £2k if your maximum budget is £1500.
2. Have a budget and stick to it.
At my boutique we always ask if there is a budget at the beginning of the consultation. This is not to judge you and laugh you out of the shop if you don’t have a huge spend. This is to keep your shopping experience enjoyable and positive and, ultimately, to help you find a dress. Yes, you want to try on the most expensive dress in the shop – of course you do, it’s beautiful – but what will you do if you like it more than any other dress you try? It’s very unlikely that you’re going to buy it. It’s more likely you’ll get depressed. Everyone has a budget, even if you don’t think you do. Try and establish what you’re seriously prepared to spend up to, and stick to it.

3. Keep your guests to a minimum – and choose wisely!
Dress shopping is supposed to be fun. The temptation is to gather a group of your friends and family and to spend a lovely day ‘oohing’ and ‘ahhing’ and quaffing champagne together. But the reality is slightly different – a) very few shops actually offer champagne (sorry to disappoint you), and b) do you really want 5 different opinions? Are you sure you want to be zipped in to a dress that puts a big smile on your face, only to be told ‘No!’ or ‘I don’t like that one’, as you step out of the changing room? We would always advise doing the initial round of shops either on your own or with one person who you trust implicitly (mum, sister, best friend etc). Once you have established what you want and made a short list (short list I said – that’s 3, not 12) of your favourite dresses, then you can ask your wider circle for their valued opinions.
4. To sample sale or not to sample sale…
I’m going to be blunt here: if you have more than 6 months to go ’til your wedding and a healthy spend, don’t bother with a sample sale. Sample sales are fantastic for brides who are short of time or have a very limited budget. But if you have a specific idea of what you’re after (“vintage lace with a v-neck, and possibly 3/4 length sleeves”), then you’re very unlikely to find it at a sale. Dresses being sold as samples are generally those that have been discontinued by the designer or have proved unpopular in the shop. That gorgeous Jenny Packham gown that you’re seeing all over the magazines? It’s not gonna be in the sample sale (sorry). But most importantly, don’t go to a sample sale if you’re at the start of your dress shopping journey as it’s very unlikely you’ll be ready to buy a dress that day, and you will be pressured to do so.
5. Trust your sales consultant – she is very wise.
Or she should be, if she’s any good at her job! No-one knows the dresses better than the person helping you. She’s not a Jedi Knight – she won’t necessarily pull out the dress of your dreams the moment you walk in. But when you’re approaching the end of your consultation and you’ve ‘quite liked’ some but haven’t gone crazy over any, and your friends are running round plucking more off the rails that they like but have no idea what they look like on, turn to the lady helping you and ask ‘what would you recommend?’. If she knows her stuff she should, at that point, be able to suggest something that ticks most or all of the boxes, but that you didn’t necessarily pick out at the beginning of the consultation.
Elizabeth Messina via Style Unveiled
6. ‘It’s how you feel, not how you look.’
This has actually become my mantra at work but it’s true. There is a reason that many bridal shops do not allow you to take photos: 1- There is a copyright issue. 2- Photos taken on a camera phone in a beige room under dodgy, artificial lighting when you have no make-up on and your sister is too close/far away/rubbish at taking photos are not going to be a true representation of how you actually look in the dress. You do not need to remember every single dress you try on; you will naturally remember (maybe not in detail, but you will remember) the dresses that felt the best. And they are the ones that you put on your short list and visit again. I have seen too many confused brides who have image after image on their phones and who are dismissing dresses because ‘my arm looks fat’ or ‘the third flower from the left is too big’. If it doesn’t feel right, it probably doesn’t look right. If it does feel right, and by this I mean if it makes you feel sexy or elegant or demure or relaxed or however you want to feel on your wedding day, well then, you’re on your way to finding your dress.
7. Don’t sweat the small stuff.
I’m not diminishing the importance of The Wedding Dress here. It is, after all, the most amount of money you will ever spend on an item of clothing, ever. But when you have narrowed it down to your final three and you’re stressing out because you love them all and you don’t know how you’re ever going to choose… Stop. Take a step back and say to yourself: ‘It’s just a dress. It’s just a lovely dress that makes me feel happy and special and that I’m going to wear the day I marry Bob/Jamie/Tarquin.’ Because that’s why you’re having a wedding after all; to marry the love of your life. And he’s just going to be happy that you’ve turned up.

Relaxing First Spa Experience

Photo Credit: iStock  spa Spa-ing. It is one of the world’s most luxurious, relaxing and blissful experiences. It can also be a bit intimidating — especially if you’ve never been sans clothes in a small room with a total stranger. Even if you have gotten a massage or facial in the past, you may need a refresher on the dos and don’ts of the hitting the spa.
Do your research
The difference between a fabulous spa experience and a meh one starts before you even enter the building. After looking at the menu, call to make an appointment. Ask pointed questions about specific treatments and express any concerns you may have. For example, if you are claustrophobic you may want to pass on that full-body seaweed wrap, which could include a solid 15 minutes of being tightly wrapped in a heated blanket — arms included. Or if you plan to spend the majority of your honeymoon on the beach, an exfoliating facial peel may not be the best idea. Also ask about the spa amenities. Are there wet rooms — steam, Jacuzzis and the like? Are the relaxation areas co-ed? Can you reserve a special couples-only spot? And, if it matters to you, request the gender of your therapist now. It’ll be tough to change once you get there.
Arrive early
It’s a good idea to be at the spa 15 minutes before your scheduled treatment. That’ll give you ample time to fill out any necessary paperwork (most spas have questionnaires that alert therapists to your likes, dislikes, alergies and injuries), change out of your street clothes, sip the complimentary herbal-infused water and teas and get into a more relaxed state of mind. Note: Some spas won’t administer certain treatments to expectant mothers. Alert your therapist, so she can suggest an appropriate one. Bump up your arrival time if you plan on using the steam and sauna facilities prior to your treatment. And be prepared — some people prefer to steam in the nude. Co-ed areas, though, generally require folks to don swimsuits.
Take it off
After you check in, you’ll be assigned a locker with a robe and slippers. Therapists prefer that you not have any necklaces, rings or other accessories on during your treatment. It’s a good idea to arrive without fine jewelry, so you won’t have to put it in your locker. And store your cell phone. If you are expecting an important call, alert the front desk. You’ll be given a robe to change into to wander around the relaxation areas. Unless you are getting a full-body scrub or water therapy, you don’t need to completely disrobe for a treatment. Although linens are changed between clients, some people prefer to keep their underpants on. Or, if provided, you may change into paper bottoms. Bikinis or swim trunks are encouraged for any services on the beach.
Speak up
While the intake questionaire should specifically target things like preferred pressure and desired areas to target, it’s a good idea to go over this once you meet your therapist. Tell her anything else she may need to know — your sports injuries or if you are especially ticklish, for example. If it’s your first time, let your therapist know. She can talk you through the treatment before she starts. Now’s also the time to use the restroom — having to hop off the table mid-massage is not only uncomfortable it eats into your treat- ment time! Most therapists ask about pressure and style once they’ve begun; let them know if it’s Ok. Also, if you’ve got a chatty Cathy and you’d prefer silence, say so.
Lounge some more
Now that you’ve been rubbed like kobe beef, you’ll want to extend that feeling of absolute calm and bliss. Take a dip in the Jacuzzi, spend some time in the sauna or kick back on a heated lounger. Some spas offer healthy-food menus. If you have the time, it’s a treat to sip green juice while relishing the tranquility. When you’re finally ready to face reality, remember that a 20% gratuity is customary for spa services.
Tip: Many resorts offer plush robes in guest rooms for use during your stay. If you have one in your room, you may consider wearing it to your appointment so you won’t have to change later.

Bridal Beauty Treatments

The Bride's Guide to Beauty Treatments

Every bride wants to look (and feel) like the most beautiful version of her self on her wedding day, myself included. In order to help make that happen, I knew I had to grow my locks out, consume nutrient-rich foods for glowing skin, and schedule hair and makeup trials well in advance. But beyond those simple beauty commandments, it can be confusing to navigate all of the prettifying options that exist for brides: Do I need to get monthly facials? If I whiten my teeth, just how white could I expect them to become? How should I prep my hair for an updo come September?
The mental image of a couple hundred different gazes locked onto my every move motivated me to get a move-on and establish a beauty countdown plan. So, despite an already humongous to-do list, I made appointments with a few pros, including a dermatologist, “just in case of an emergency.” It turned out to be the best thing I could have done.
I was diagnosed with rosacea — which explained why my skin became red and blotchy after hot showers and exercising — and saw a vast improvement after using a prescribed cream for just two months. In addition, I decided to spring for at-home teeth bleaching trays and couldn't believe how easy they were to use. I felt like a movie star at my bridal shower. With a little guidance, I feel more camera-ready with just about four months to go!
Thinking of splurging on a beauty treatment for your hair, teeth, or skin, too? Read this first so that you know what to expect.

Hair Extensions:

Who they're best for: Everyone! Raphael Reboh, the master stylist and founder of Femme Coiffure Hair Spa in Miami, assured us that they’re weightless and discreet. “You can pull the hair up and back without seeing the bulk of clips or braids — the tape is translucent, so it’s not very noticeable.” He’s styled the tresses of A-listers like Jennifer Aniston, Adriana Lima, and Cameron Diaz.
There’s an array of extension options —  glue, tape, sew-in, braidless, clip-on, natural vs. synthetic — so talk to your hairstylist to determine the best one for your budget and hair type. Reboh uses natural virgin hair extensions at his salon.
How they work: It takes about one to one-and-a-half hours to get the hair extensions placed in, depending on the length and volume. Reboh says that the process shouldn’t hurt at all, and they won't damage the hair follicles.
When to do it: Two weeks before the wedding. The extensions are applied as close to the root as possible, so after 14 days, the scalp has loosened up. Little maintenance is required of them; if the tape grows downward due to rapid hair growth, they can be reapplied closer to the scalp.
What to expect: Hair extensions last about four months, depending on how slow or fast your hair grows, and they can be washed and styled daily. After you've gotten them, Reboh recommends that you use sulfate-free products and avoid heavy oils, pomades, or products with alcohol.
Average cost: A half-head or strategically placed extensions (more length in the front, middle, and/or back of the head) start at $400; a full head can cost up to $1,500. “This is an investment, as you can custom dye the extensions and not ruin your hair’s natural health,” said Reboh.

Other treatments: Hair glossing is also popular with brides. It makes the hair look really fresh, shiny and healthy, without altering the color. It needs to be done about four to six weeks before the wedding. The process takes 15 minutes and starts at $95.

Hair Tips for Any Bride:

Avoid split ends (“they shouldn’t be invited to the wedding!” said Reboh). Get your hair trimmed as often as needed and book conditioning treatments to ensure healthy locks.
Keep in mind that not every treatment is right for you. Always schedule a consultation and listen to your stylist — they won't steer you wrong on the most important day of your life. "If we advise against something, it’s because we want to maintain the hair’s health.”
The most-requested wedding hairstyle: At Femme Coiffure Hair Spa, natural beach waves with really soft layers are in demand (think: bedroom hair). Want to wear a chignon or high ballerina bun, instead? Avoid a layered cut, which requires more work, product, and stress on the hair.

Brides Make Dress

Bringing an Entourage

We know it’s the most important dress you’ll ever wear, and you want to make sure it’s absolutely perfect. But having 10 different opinions makes it much harder to come to a consensus—and it can bring you farther away from what you actually want. “I have always been a believer that the most a bride should bring when dress shopping is two people,” said Cristina DeMarco, of Bridal Reflections in New York, NY.
Most brides do best with just their mom and maybe a sister or best friend, said Debra Lash, of The Wedding Tree in La Crosse, WI. “They generally have the bride’s best interest at heart, not what they want her to wear.” One of our real bride bloggers, Theresa Misso, recently wrote about her dress shopping experiences and said, “When you're standing there in a big dress, and random people in the store are ohh-ing and ahh-ing and all you want to do is take it off, you’ll need an honest, reliable companion to say, ‘I love it. But it’s just not you.’”

Shopping Too Early

Many couples are opting for longer engagements these days, but don’t start shopping more than 12 months in advance. “The moment a bride starts trying on gowns, she’ll inevitably fall in love with one,” said Lash. “If she’s not ready to buy, it quickly becomes difficult for her. In other words: Do not visit bridal salons until you’re ready to make a purchase.”
It’s important to have the rest of your wedding details in place before you can truly shop for a gown, since many factors can influence the style of the dress. Consider your venue: “An ornate gown with tons of embellishments and a sizeable train might look stunning in a ballroom but completely out of place at a beachfront ceremony,” said Tolu Ogbechie, one of our real bride bloggers. Also, the colors you choose for your bridesmaids and décor can influence whether you choose white or an off-white shade.
But, at the same time, don’t procrastinate. Most dresses take anywhere from five to eight months to come in, according to DeMarco. You can sometimes place a rush order if you need it in under five months, but it’ll cost you.

Trying On Too Many Dresses

priscilla of boston dressIf you’re a fan of Say Yes to the Dress, you’ve undoubtedly seen a bride who’s tried on 100+ dresses without finding the right one. Most brides try on between four and seven gowns, said DeMarco, and shouldn’t try on more than 10, because it can lead to confusion.
Often, a bride is trying on dress after dress because she’s just not ready to end the shopping experience and make a real commitment. “The most common mistake that a bride makes is not purchasing her gown when she finds it,” said Lash. “The danger that befalls her is she becomes overwhelmed and forgets what she originally set out to find. She begins to doubt herself and starts to lose faith in the experience.”
Not every bride has “that moment” when the tears start rolling and you know you’ve absolutely found “The One.” Real bride blogger Crista kept searching until the tears started rolling. While trying on a Priscilla of Boston gown (pictured right), Crista noted, "As I gazed upon my reflection, I noticed my family standing around me, teary-eyed. Although I was touched by their reaction, I wondered, ‘Why aren’t I crying?’” said Crista. “I decided not to purchase that dress and left the salon contemplating my shopping experience.”

Being Swayed by Steep Discounts

Try not to be too tempted by the lure of your dream designer gown for 70% off. “The biggest mistake I have seen brides make is purchasing a gown online or from a shop for a deep discount ‘only today,’” said Lash.
Sample sales are popular among brides, but you must keep in mind that you are typically truly purchasing just that — a sample: The dress has been tried on by hundreds of brides and could have been torn, stained, or otherwise damaged during the process. Before making a purchase, check the gown very carefully for any damage—and if there's anything that can’t easily be fixed, put it back. Some brides end up spending hundreds in alterations to fix what’s wrong with the sample when they could’ve found a similar brand new dress for not much more money.

Kimberly Sanicki, of Wanaque, NJ, found her perfect wedding gown (left) at a “Running of the Brides” event thrown by Filene’s Basement. She found a stunning Essense of Australia gown for just $500, marked down from $3,000. Before handing over the cash, Kimberly and her mom thoroughly examined the gown to check for any flaws. “My mom made sure it had every crystal, and it did not need to be cleaned or even hemmed,” said Sanicki.

Demanding the Wrong Size

Wedding gown sizes typically run one or two sizes smaller than street clothes, so try not to get hung up on the number. “Do not fixate on the actual size but instead on how your measurements compare to the particular line on the specific designer’s size chart,” said Gesinee of Gesinee’s Bridal in Concord, CA.
Planning on losing weight before the big day? “If I had a nickel for every person I have measured who said they were going to lose weight, I would be rich!” said Lash. Play it safe and order a size that fits your current body. Any dress can be taken in, typically up to four sizes without affecting the look of the dress, but most can only be let out one full size—if that. “You need to be realistic, in case you don’t lose your targeted weight,” says DeMarco.
What happens if your dress doesn’t fit when it comes in? First, don’t freak out and go on a crash diet. “There’s always something you can do,” said DeMarco. “You can order fabric from the designer, add beading, or even put in a new back to accommodate the measurements needed.”
