How to Buy Sunglasses

Girl with pink zebra striped sunglassesSunglasses are a non-negotiable summer staple. They not only protect our eyes from damaging solar rays, but they make us look damn good doing it! They’re beautiful, functional, hide a multitude of sins, match your outfit and complement your features. What’s not to love about sunnies?
If you’re looking for a new pair of sunglasses for summer, here’s a handy guide to shopping for your perfect pair of shades – from the right frame shape for your face to the perfect color for you. I’ve also included some trendy and inexpensive sunglasses for each face shape.

The Best Sunglasses for Your Face Shape

The perfect pair of sunglasses will flatter your face shape and balance your natural features out. The basic rule for choosing a frame for your face is to look for one that will contrast with your face shape. If you aren’t sure what your face shape is, here’s a guide to determining your face shape.
If you already know your face shape, here are some tips to finding your perfect pair of sunglasses for each of the four basic face shapes.
* Oval Face
You have it the easiest when it comes to shopping for sunglasses – most frame shapes will work for you! Oval faces can handle round or square frames, oversized shades, aviators, and everything in between. Of course, depending on your individual features, certain styles might not work as well as others. Also, make sure to look for styles that are in proportion to your face and features – if you have small features and a small face, steer clear of the oversized sunglasses look (unless you’re specifically going for the “little girl in huge sunglasses” thing a la Mary-Kate Olsen).

* Round Face
A circular face requires angular sunglasses to balance out the roundness. Straight lines are important, so look for square or rectangular frames if possible. Again, pay attention to proportions – if you have large features and a large face, don’t attempt tiny sunglasses as they will only make your face/features look distorted.

* Heart-Shaped Face
If you have a heart shaped face that’s wider at the top than at the bottom, look for sunglasses that echo this shape. The aviator is a perfect example of this. Aviator shades are super-flattering on heart-shaped faces. You can also get away with certain rounded and rectangular frames so long as the upper part of the frame is larger than the lower.

* Square Face
Square faced girls should stick to curved sunglasses – they help soften your facial features and downplay your angular face shape. To draw attention away from a strong jawline, look for frames that sit slightly higher than usual on your face. This will help draw the eye up toward your eyes.

What color sunglasses should you choose?

Now that you know what shape of sunglasses to buy, what about color? Sunnies come in so many colors these days – it can be near impossible to choose just one! If you need some help, here are some tips to help you decide on the best color for you.
Neon Wayfarers
* You can’t go wrong with basic black. Everyone should have at least one pair of gigantic black sunglasses for everyday wear – they’re so Breakfast at Tiffany’s. For extra movie-star appeal, make sure the lenses are as dark as possible.
* Pay attention to the colors you wear most often. You want your sunglasses to work with the majority of your clothes. Do you wear cool colors most often? If so, try to stay with cool colored sunglasses in shades like black, gray, blue, and silver. If you tend to wear warmer colors, look for brown, red, gold, or similar warm-toned sunglasses.
* Try to buy shades in one of the colors that flatters you most. Shades that flatter your skin and hair coloring will bring out your features and make you glow. Not sure which colors look best on you? See my article How to Find Your Perfect Colors.
* Have fun and experiment with cheap, colorful frames. Neon sunglasses are a huge trend for summer 2009, so I recommend having some fun and trying the trend out with some inexpensive frames. Sometimes it’s fun to wear ridiculously bright, cheap sunglasses. Keep the rest of your outfit simple & classy but go wild with your shades for a look that’s very modern and right-now.

A Final Tip

The most important thing to remember when shopping for sunglasses: try on as many pairs as you can! It’s fun to buy cheap ones online sometimes, but you should really go to a store and test them out in person. Each pair is different and will make your face look different. Experiment as much as possible ’til you find your perfect ones!

I’m not a fashion expert.
I find trendy fashion-forward people to be uppity snobs.  They follow whatever popular people wear so they can be the first person in Omaha, Nebraska to wear the latest Ed Hardy’s.
Meanwhile, I’m keeping my pants up with an extension cord.
Regardless of whether you would deem me a ‘fashion expert’, I know what I don’t like.  I know what looks silly.
Massive sunglasses on women?
Silly.
Ladies, if you own a pair, throw them out.  They’re not doing anything for you.  If you’re good looking, you don’t need half your face blocked by huge plastic glasses.
Here’s three reasons why you should just say no to big sunglasses.
1. You’re not flying a World War II plane.
Aviators in the early 1940’s flew planes that sometimes had open cabins.  The wind was fierce and debris would fly into the pilot’s eyes.  For this reason, they needed large, goggle-like glasses to protect themselves.  Many of you do not fly World War II planes, do you?  You’re driving X5’s with air conditioning right?  Unless you pilot that X5 through a swarm of German fighter-jets to protect a bridge in  Arnhem, buy smaller glasses.
2. You’re not driving in a side-pod to a motorcycle.
Back in olden times, people would drive in motorcycles with their partners next to them in an attached side-pod.  These people needed large glasses due to debris and cow-dung that would fly up into their grill while they traveled.  Many times, their large glasses would protect them from cow-dung-related incidents.  However, when they commenced their journey, they were usually ignored by the driver of the motorcycle.  Because I mean really, who’s talking to someone with cow-dung on their face?
3. You do not pollinate flowering plants.
The honey bee features compound eyes that can only distinguish between six different colors.  You can tell the difference between all five Pussy Cat dolls just by their outfits.  Glasses.  Unneeded.

I know that many of you will throw your tiny hot hands up in the air and object.  You will say, “I’m hot and I can rock large glasses and I look totally hot in them.  So whatever, extension-boy-belt-man-with-a-shitty-blog-nobody-reads, I’m going to check my Facebook and then go tan.  Screw you.”
How entirely hurtful.
But you know I’m right.  You know it’s absolutely ridiculous to have kaleidoscope glasses in this day and age and it makes you look silly.  Sunglasses are for your eyeballs.  Your eyeballs.  Not for your upper cheek, parts of your upper-jaw, your forehead.  It’s enough already.  Wear normal-sized glasses and let your face do the rest.  I’m sure you’re appealing enough

Enjoy the Mall

 Window shoppingI think at some point I may have mentioned my love of malls.  In the spring, I did a piece called "How to Shop with an Anti-Mall Person" about how to drag non-mall lovers with you on shopping trips.  Unfortunately, my love of malls can get a bit expensive (clothes, shoes, makeup, Cinnabons etc.) so I have devised a few simple tips to still enjoy the mall without spending any money.
1. Window Shopping.  Yes, you can pretend you are in an old movie and wander up past stores gazing in the windows.  Mock what the mannequins are wearing and wonder how you would look in each outfit.  Gaze into expensive stores and muse about how great it would be to shop exclusively there.
2. Try On Clothes.  You can not just look at store displays forever.  Then it is like being in a museum as opposed to the wonderfulness of the mall.  So try on clothes.  When I was in middle school/the beginning of high school, my friends and I would love to go into department stores like Macy's or Bloomingdale to try on dresses.  We would go to the formal department and pretend we were going to a wedding or a prom that required gowns.  A bunch of us would pile into the dressing room with every type and color of dress imaginable and try everything on.  I'm sure there are more embarrassing Facebook pictures of me in a dressing room in a floor-length silk gown with ostrich feathers on it than I'd care to admit.  But it's fun to just try on clothes that you have no intention of buying.
3. Mix and match accessories.  Go to the jewelry section and try on different rings and bracelets.  See how you would look in a cowboy hat.  Consider that silver really could be your perfect jewelry color.  Check out scarves, belts, and sunglasses too.  Spend some time trying on stuff you would never think about wearing.  You might discover you look good in an item that you would have never considered before.
Girls in sunglasses4. Go to the makeup counter/nearest lotion store.  Go into a makeup store and use the free samples.  Try on green mascara and liquid eyeliner.  Learn what tools do what and which products are the best.  Many makeup stores such as Sephora have free sample sections where you can try out different colors.  Go to a soap store like Bath & Body Works to try on soaps, perfumes, and lotions.  Smell every single scent of everything.  Find out what you like!  It's the perfect time to experiment.
5. Free samples at the food court.  In my experience, most malls have food courts and on Saturdays, most food court vendors have free samples.  You can get an entire meal if you time your stroll around the food court precisely.  I have had mini hot dogs, raspberry lemonades, and ginger chicken on particularly successful Saturdays.
Here you can have all the fun of going to the mall without spending any of your hard earned money.  It may be a little hard to not spend any money like on a memorable episode of Gilmore Girls but I have faith that this trip will be fun and maybe encourage you to save some money for your next outing.
